It’s up to us, their human guardians, to make sure we are able to provide them with a safe and secure permanent home before we bring them home and they become attached to us. They deserve to have everything they need to settle in securely and flourish in your care for the rest of their life. That’s why this isn’t a decision to be taken lightly.

You’ll want to carefully consider the various traits, needs, and behaviors of any dog you’re considering and match them to your lifestyle and what you can offer them as the years pass. Because after all, you’re choosing a companion that will likely be with you for 10 to 15 years or even longer for some.

Will you be willing to be flexible, adjust to and love and care for a dog that doesn’t quite fit your expectations but is still absolutely loveable?

Finding your new canine best friend will be exciting! There are so many different amazing breeds or breed mixes in all shapes and sizes to choose from! It can be a lot of fun to learn about dogs and of course, all their different personalities and behaviors. It’s a sure bet that there’s a right dog out there for everyone.

Here are some suggestions for both behavioral and breed-related considerations to keep in mind:

What is your lifestyle? How will your dog fit in?
What kinds of activities will you want to do together?
What type and size dog fits both your lifestyle and also your home?
What kind of personality are you looking for in a dog?
Do you have children? Keep in mind that some dogs are naturally good with children and others are not.
Long hair, short hair? Shedding? What will their grooming needs be?
Are there any particular health issues to watch out for in the breed or breed mix you are considering?
Some dogs will need more training than others. Are you up for that?
Some dogs have high energy and will need a lot of exercise and time outdoors.
Some dogs are fine with a more sedentary life and will be happy to just sit on your lap staring into your eyes, trying to hypnotize you into giving them a treat.

Because Santa Barbara County experiences a high rate of canine cough (also known as “Kennel Cough”), we strongly recommend bordetella vaccination boosters every six months, but we will defer to individual veterinarians who use a once yearly protocol. Immunization should be completed at least one week before your pet’s arrival at our training facility.
